5 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Before Starting Your Home Search

For many who have never purchased a home or are starting their home search after many years removed from the housing market, it can be an overwhelming task. Many start their home search without knowing what they want from the process or what they’re looking for.  Luckily, I am here to help you with this process.  Here are 5 questions that you should ask yourself before starting your home search.

1. Can I Afford To Purchase A Home?

Many times people just assume that they can/can’t buy a home. Your best bet is to talk to a mortgage professional. They can give you an accurate outlook on when and what you might be able to purchase. You may be surprised at what they can do for you.

2. Which Real Estate Agent Should I Use?

This is a very personal decision! One Realtor may have been great for your friend, but may not be the best fit for you. It’s kind of like dating. You want someone that you connect with, that you feel you can trust, and that you feel has your best interest at heart. Having a conversation with several agents will give you a good idea about who you connect with and who you feel you may be able to form a professional relationship with. Don’t be embarrassed if you want to “interview” several agents. After all you are hiring them to work for you!

3. What Do I Really Want In A Home?

Sure, we would all like our perfect dream home that we’ve seen/created on Pinterest, but the reality is that NO HOME IS PERFECT!! I suggest making a Top 10 List of things you absolutely cannot/will not live without. Bu be realistic.

For example: If you are wanting to be by the ocean, but you are moving to Idaho chances are slim to none that the ocean is going to be your view. OR if you are wanting a 10,000 square foot home with a maid and butler but your budget is $150,000 maybe your list needs to be revised.

 4. Am I A DIYer?

Since no home is perfect you need to know what you are capable of repairing/changing yourself and what you are going to need to hire out. Oftentimes doing things yourself can be cheaper and very rewarding. If you aren’t very handy though it can be costly and frustrating. Knowing beforehand what you are and aren’t willing to do to a home will save you much frustration after the fact.

5. Am I Ready To Listen To Expert Advice/Recommendations?

NEVER ASSUME!! What you picture in your head, the deal that your second uncle once removed got on a house or what you have seen on Zillow may not always be accurate or realistic for your circumstance. Trust and listen to your Real Estate Agent. Do not be dismayed if you did your homework and chose a good one only to have your real estate agent show you that there are things that you might not have considered. Your agent will open your mind and eyes to things you may not have thought about that may actually turn out to be what’s best for you. Remember you hired them for a reason. Let them work for you and they will reward you in spades.Image title
